Located in the upper left corner of the contiguous United States, Washington State is home to a diverse and hardy people. The Eastern half of Washington remains largely agricultural, although it is home to several small cities like Spokane, Yakima and the Tri-Cities. Interstate 5 takes travelers from as far south as San Diego to as far North as the British Columbia Province of Canada. The Eastern border of Washington is the mighty Pacific Ocean and the State is home to many small beach towns like Aberdeen.

Perhaps the most geographically recognizable feature of Washington State is the Puget Sound, a bay that intrudes almost a third of the way into the state, bringing the Pacific Ocean inland and creating a chain of tiny islands. The effect of the sound on the weather is to create a mild winter, with lots of fog and lots of rain, reminiscent of England.

Why are all these people choosing Washington as their new home?

Washington State is a very livable state. The largest city in Washington is Seattle, itself a top twenty city in the US (measuring by population). Seattle is nestled between the Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains, and has grown down to Tacoma, which ties two other cities to be second largest in the state. Sandwiched between these two large cities is Sea-Tac, where Seattle International Airport is located. Together these three cities form a megalopolis with industry such as Boeing and Amazon.

In addition to the Puget Sound one of the other prominent geographic features is the Cascade Mountains Range which runs down the middle of the state. The Cascades are the second longest mountain range in the United States. Cutting a path through Cascades at the border of Washington and its neighbor to the South, Oregon, is the Columbia River. The mighty Columbia is the second longest in the US and provides residents with irrigation water, recreational boating and fishing, and power from hydro-electric dams.

Another note-worthy place in Washington State is the city of Vancouver. Located across from the more populous city of Portland, Oregon, Vancouver is older and more conservative. Vancouver was an established British fur trading post long before US settlers began forming Portland. Vancouver has the second oldest operating Airport in the United States and is the place where Yuri Chekalov Landed the first Trans-Pacific flight. . It’s also the birthplace of U-Haul Truck Rental Company and Miracle Man Movers.

While Vancouver doesn’t have any nationally known sports teams, Seattle has the Seahawks football team, the Mariners Baseball Team and at one point housed the Super Sonics Basketball team.

Higher education in Washington offers as many choices as you could ask for. State Universities include Washington State University (Wassu Cougars) and University of Washington (UDUB Huskies) and Private colleges such as Walla Walla University and Whitman College, as well as Gonzaga University.

The movie industry has also visited Washington State. Forks, Washington is the real town that was imaginary home to the Vampires of Twilight. Historically, Seattle hosted a World’s Fair in 1962, and long before that Washington was visited by adventurers Lewis and Clark.
