When a move day is on the horizon, important members of the household and their well-being become a concern—Our pets! Cats, dogs, birds, rats, ferrets, lizards, and snakes are a few of the many critters we choose to share our homes with. A big change like moving can be as stressful (or more so) for our animal companions as it is for us. What can we do? Miracle Man Movers cares about eliminating stress in all aspects of a move. Here are a few tips and helpful advice.
1. Prepping Pets for the move
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care. While time and tensions can be tight, how do we take our pets needs into consideration? Now is the time to think about how they will be transported (car, airplane, train, etc) and what the rules/regulations are regarding pet travel. If a pet carrier is needed, it will be beneficial to allow your animal the opportunity to become familiar with this space. Once you move, your animal may remain near or in the carrier until they are comfortable. Below are items you may need. They should be put in an easily accessible bag, or tote.
· Medications
· Food/bottled water, possibly a cooler if needed
· Water dish
· Leash/harness
· Litter, litter box/scooper
· Poo bags/pee pads
· Toys, like a chewy stick for a dog or small mouse for a cat
· A blanket or article of your clothing that smells like “you” and “home”
· Emergency contact information for nearby 24-hour veterinarians in case of an issue
2. Move Day is here!
There is a lot of change happening, doors will be opening and closing. It is likely that your pet will seek to get away from all the chaos. The last thing a family should experience after a new move is a displaced pet, be proactive. A friend or family member could take them for the day. There are also animal daycares available depending on location. It may be necessary to block off a room, so your animal has a safe place to be until the business of the move dies down. Be sure they have food, water, a comfortable spot, and access to go to the bathroom if needed. Take temperature into consideration to be sure pets don’t become too hot or too cool.
3. After Moving
Anxiety and worries can be eliminated for both pet and owner with the simple act of play after a move. Take your dog for a walk around the new space to help them familiarize, then go for walks outside, too! It fills a dog’s emotional cup to enjoy the new sights & smells. Encourage your kitty to chase a laser, or perhaps a new perch for your bird. You know what makes your pet happy, because you love them!
